Escalation Procedure

In the event that one of our Guests is acting in a way that is disruptive or makes other Guests uncomfortable, the following steps are to be taken:

1. Establish a relationship.

Two Volunteers (not just one) should sit with the Guest and engage in conversation.  Normally, the building of rapport with the individual will allow the Volunteers to establish the reason for the behavior and find a simple way to change it.

2. Ask directly that the behavior be stopped.

This takes a little bit of courage, but simply stating what needs to happen and why it needs to happen will often resolve the situation.  Key phrases include: "We would appreciate it if you would stop doing XXX.  If you look around, you'll see people of all types, including children, and we want for all of them to feel comfortable and to have a pleasant experience.  We are offering this as a safe place for everyone."

3. Offer them a container to take their food with them.

If the Guest continues to engage in the behavior, offer to allow him/her to take the food and leave immediately.  Invite the Guest back for another meal, as long as he/she is willing to abide by our guidelines.

4. Call the Police.

There is no need to involve the Pastors of FUMC - if the individual refuses to leave or poses a threat in any way, simply call 911.  Don't hesitate - we'd much rather overreact and protect the safety of our Guests and Volunteers.  The Police are paid to deal with situations like this.
