As you can imagine, there are all kinds of pieces in the big puzzle known as "Food At First". Below are some of the things that we need help with - if you're interested, simply mail scott@foodatfirst.com, and let him know! You may have other ideas as well - don't hesitate to bring them up - we're all in this thing together!
You could...
* be a "head chef" for a meal, or a certain meal every month - you can decide the meal yourself, or go with what's tentatively planned for you; you can use your own recipes, or we can provide them for you; you're the one who guides the cooking process, with several others there to help with the work
* help with inventory - organizing the pantry once, or once per month... cleaning out the refrigerator / freezer and completing an inventory checklist... several ways to help!
* be on the Advisory Board - the meals are under the umbrella of FUMC, but there are specific decisions to be made, so the Advisory Board is a representative gathering of the organizations and congregations involved with Food At First
* help with "gleaning". Remember how your mom told you to clean your plate, because there were kids starving in another country? Would you be surprised to know that literally TONS of edible food are thrown away every day right here in Ames, by local grocery stores and restaurants? This is great food, that can really make a difference to individuals and families struggling to find a few bucks to purchase food for their next meal. We need someone to go to Hy-Vee West on Monday or Tuesday morning at 6:30 AM to pick up the bread, then to get it to the church before that night’s meal. If that doesn’t work for you, but you’d be interested in helping at another time, let us know!
